THE EXCHANGE OF SITES.

AGAIN DISCUSSED BY THE TRUST JLANDS TRUST,

The question of the exchange of

sites between £&e Trust Lands T«is- * tees and the government on condition that the Trustees pay the Government £I,OOO, was again discussed at the meeting of the Trust Lands Trustees, last evening, when #lr W. H. Jackson moved, by notice, <(& at the resolution passed at the last jjjjgeting of the Trust, declining the .offer of the Government, be rescinded. His reason for moving the motion was that the Trustees had r.o

right io decline the offer without consulting the voters. Whatever ■*£»urbe was adopted he considered that offer of the Government should be submitttd to the voters. He also considered that the motion passed at the last meeting stopped all negotiations with the Government and undoubtedly the people of the town considered that thg offer should be accepted/ If the offer were accepted, it would be of undoubted benefit to the town. The difference between the two sections was only 1,700 square feet, and one was not twice as big as the other, as represented. He was quite satisfied that the Trustees would lose nothing if they rescinded the motion, and allowed the matter to go before the voters. It could not then be said that the Trustees, had acted without the consent of the voters. Finally, he considered that if the Trustees affected the exchange, it would be one of the best business speculations that they had yet entered into. Mr D.Caselberg seconded the motion, and he, with the other speaker, urged the desirability of allowing the matter to be settled by the voters. The Chairman said that the question had been put before the ratepayers some years ago, and they had decided that the Trustees should make the best terms they could to effect the exchange. After further discussion, the motion was put to the meeting, and lost on the casting vote of the Chairman, the voting being—Ayes: Messrs Caselberg, Eton, Jackson, Krahagen. Noes: Messrs Wagg, Hessey, McEwen, and Michell. Later on in the meeting Mr Jackson gave notice to move at the next meeting that be taken to place the offer of the Govenment before t l voters.
