SUPREME COURT.
WELLINGTON SITTING. By Telegraph—Press Association. WELLINGTON, August 14. At the Supreme Court, to-day, William Jowett Hirst was found guilty of forging and uttering cheques for £3 15s and £l6 9s at Pahiatua. The jury recommended accused to leniency owing to his previous good character. Sentence was deferred till Friday. Harold Pitt Johnson pleaded not guilty to stealing two boxes of tobacco from the Masterton railway sheds, where he was employed as storeman. Accused was found not guilty.

CHRISTCHURCH, August 14,
At the Supreme' Court, to-day, William Powers, at present serving a sentence of five years, was sentenced to two more years' imprisonment for breaking gaol. Henry Dyer, an elderly man moving in respectable society, was sentenced to ten years for incest with his granddaughter. William Stanton, who had been practising here for some time past H as a healer and cancer-curer, was convicted of manslaughter in respect of the death from diphtheria of a young man treated by him. Stanton had failed to diagnose the case as one of diphtl.e'ia, and his treatment, according to the medical testimony, was absolutely useless for the purpose of checking the complaint. Had the patient l'eceived proper treatment his life would have been saved. Sentence was deferred until to-morrow.
