THE LAWN TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIPS.

(From Our London Correspondent.) LONDON, July 3.

In the open mixed doubles the late evening yesterday held two surprises. The favourite pairs for the final were each beaten. In the centre court Mr Beals Wright and Miss Sutton just pulled off a fine match with Mr Wilding and Mrs Lambert Chambers. Outside, at the same time, Mrs Hillyard and Mr Ball Greene were beating Miss Wilson and Mr A. W. Gore. In the former match the British pair started out like winners, and, though the set was hard and fast, took it comfortably. In the second set the service won for some time; but Mr Beals Wright's game seemed to get steadily better. Constantly he got across the court, and stole many smashes out of the long driving matches of Mrs Chambers and Miss Sutton. Mr Wilding tried to do the same, but he did not choose his time so well. Miss Sutton, again, on occasion, had a pretty lyiack of deception, and these two causes were enough .to beat Mr Wilding constantly, and throw an impossible amount of work on his partner. The Americans took the second set, and the final was v.erv keenly won. Services won again until 4 all, when Mr Wilding lost his service. Mr Beals Wright following, won 10 to love, and with it set and match. Miss Sutton and he thoroughly deserved their victory. They played much better together than Americans generally do in mixed doubles, and Mr Wright's smashing was splendidly effective. Mr W.ilding needs more of a "sitter" before he can be relied upon to kill. Greatly as he has improved his overhead game, his play there is still weaker than elsewhere.
