ATTEMPTED BLACKMaIL. Received August 5, 9 a.m. PRETORIA, August 4. Breytenbach was sentenced to three years' penal servitude for attempting blackmail. He alleged that Mr Botha, the Premier, had been bribed by the dynamite commissionaires before the war. De Haas, editor of the Land en Volk, after a favourable summing up by the judge, was acquitted and discharged without a stain on his character. He declared that he would sue the Crown for unjustifiable arrest. RAISULI AND KAID MACLEAN.
Received August 5, 9 a.m. MOROCCO, August 4. Raisuli declares that the Kaid (Sir Harry Maclean) was insincere, and was therefore captured. He offers to negotiate with the British Legation through Reuter's correspondent. THE CZAR AND KAISER. Received August 5, 8.27 a.m. BERLIN, August 4. The yachts Hohenzollern and Standart met at Swinemunde, and the Ka ; ser and Czar exchanged visits. Received August 5, 9.52 p.m. BEKLIN, August 5. It is semi-officially announced here that th.3 Kaiser's and Czar's visits arj of a purely personal character. Prince von Bulow's organ declares that neither secret treaties nor surprises of any kind will result from the visits. THE BRITISH FLEET.
Received August 5, 9.42 p.m. LONDON, August 5. His Majesty the King, in reviewing the Fleet in the Solent, expressed satisfaction at the efficient condition of the Home Fleet.
ANTARCTIC EXPLORATION. Received August 5, 9.42 p.m. LONDON, August 5. King Edward and Queen Alexandra, the Prince of Wales and the Duke of Connaught, visited the Antarctic expeditionary shi ; ) Himrod, at Cocoes. The party were greatly interested in the equipment of the vessel. His Majesty the King decorated Lieut. Shackleton, Commander, with ihe Victorian Order, as an incentive to scientific research and exploration. He hoped the intrepid and difficult enterprise would be successful. Her Majesty the Queen presented her portrait to Lieutenant Shackleton. Her Majesty also present? .1 him with a silk Union Jack, remarking: "May this lead you safely to the South Pole." Mr William A. Bell, a Surrey gentleman ; has presented £4,000 towards the expedition. FATAL EXPLOSION OF FIREDAMP. Received August 5, 11.29 p.m. BERLIN, August 5. An explosion of fire-damp in the Koenig Mine, at Mittelbexbach, killed 18 and injured 11. <
