CASTLEPOINT COUNTY COUNCIL.
The ordinary meeting of the Council was held on Saturday last. There were present—Crs Speedy (chairman) Langdon, Bennett, Ryder, Innes and Foreman. Correspondence was read from the Valuer-General applying for the capital value and value of improvements of last year's valuations on which the rates were made.—The Department of Roads, returning receipt for £l6O, and requesting a certificate of same to be returned.—Mr J. Barton applied to have Mr Edward Barton's name placed on the rate book for the sections of land being part 371, Whakataki, in place of John Barton.—Mr W. G. Groves, requesting the Council not to proceed with the closing of a road from Bushgrove to part 1 of section 865, as previously requested. A petition was received, signed by twenty ratepayers, praying that the Council will take steps to raise a loan to make the road on the old surveyed line down the Whakataki Valley. The Council decided to include the whole County in the rating area. The Clerk i was directed to arrange with* the promoters in respect to initial costs should the loan not be carried. i A statement of the estimated receipts and expenditure for the current year was read, showing a credit balance on March 31st in the General Account of £538 7s 6d. The estimated receipts, including the last amount,are £4,693 7s 4d, and the esti- . mated expenditure, including a lia- I bility on March 31st of £974 13s, I was £5,053 9s 4d. j The question of a general rate was considered, and it was proposed to . levy a twopenny rate. This was lost, and a rate of seven farthings in the pound was carried. The Clerk Was directed to advertise the inten- i tion of the Council to make a rate [ of seven farthings in the pound for j the current year. ) The question of breaking stones ! for road metal was then considered, and it was decided to ask Mr H. McPhee the charges for cracking stones with the stone crusher, and invite , 3iim to come and examine the stone, I with a view of getting it broken. An objection to the road through j Block 3, Native Reserve, Whakataki I was received from the native owners, j "The Clerk was directed to communi- J «ate with the owners with a view of arriving at a satisfactory settlement. Accounts amounting to £282 5s Id were passed for payment. - i
