THE CASABLANCA MASSACRE.
Received August 2, 11.18 p.m. MOROCCO. August 2. Prior to the Casablanca massacre the tribesmen demanded the stoppage of the harbour works. The Governor replied that the work was being done with the Sultan's consent. ~ The tribesmen [rejoined that the Sultan no longer existed since he obeyed Christians. The Governor, in order to gain time, asked them to return next morning. As the tribesmen did not return he concluded that their threats had been exaggerated, but suddenly emissaries incited the native inhabitants to commit outrages. After the massacre, the Governor, on M. Neuviile insisting on him doing so, furnished an escort enabling a number of French inhabitants to embark. Others remained at the French Consulate. The Governor was warned that he would be held responsible for the safety of the European inhabitants. •
