MASTERTON BOROUGH COUNCIL
WORKS COMMITTEE. A meeting of the Works Committee of the Masterton Borough Council was held last evening. There were present—Crs J. 11. Pauling (chairman), W. Pragnell, A. Haughey and W. Morris. An apology for absence was received from Cr J. Prentice. A petition was received from the residents of Walton's Avenue asking that some gravel should be spread on the footpath. The Engineer was instructed to have the work put in hand. MrM. Caselberg wrote stating that the culvert in front of his house in Worksop Road was blocked up, and that the whole of the water f"om the street was turned into his garden, doing considerable damage. The Council had previously been notified of the mntter, and if any further damage was caused he would hold the Council responsible and place the matter in his'solicitor's hands. It was decided to inform Mr Caselberg that the culvert is his own and that he should keep it clean. In connection with the erection of an asphalt shed the Engineer was instructed to remove the shed at present being used by the Borough and erect it on the corporation property | in Hope Street. The details will be ! arranged by the committee with the Engineer. The Engineer recommended that cast iron tops should be used in lieu of wood in the manho-es where the wooden tops have proved defective. He jjalso recommended that tenders should be invited for the supply of a dozen cast iron tops. The recommendations were approved. It was decided to acquire the iar.d for extendign Colombo Road to Cockburn Street, and have the new road fenced provided the [County Council would pay half the cost of the work as agreed upon in their letter. It was resolved to procure an extra screen for the stone crusher, and obtain further information regarding an elevator. The committee resolved to write to Mr J. Cavanagh pointing out that his contract at the ends of Cockburn and Short Streets is not yet finished. The Engineer estimated the cost of gravelling Nursery Koad at £77. It was resolved to recommend the Council to put the work in han d and ask the County Council if they were prepared to pay half the cost. It was resolved to accept Mr H. Evans' offer to supply 1,000 yards cf stones at fourpeuce per yard. At the request cf Messrs Retfcer and Mason, the committee decided to extend a l£in. water main to thenproperty in Elizabeth Street. It was decided to commence the work of widening Makora Street as soon as the estimates are adopted. It was resolved to erect additional street lamps at the junction of Pownall and Renall Streets, in Bannister Street between the Gasworks and Colombo Road, at the end of the gas main in Essex Street, and at the junction of Cole and Pownall Streets. The committee resolved to recommend the Council to have the Engineer's office connected \v:th the telephone exchange.
