RATES OF COMMISSION.
By Telegraph—Press Association. AUCKLAND, July 27. "Does not the Chamber of Commerce fix rates of commission in Auckland?" asked Mr C. C. Kettle, to-day,, during the hearing of claim for commission respecting the sale of a hotel. "I'm afraid not," replied Mr J. R. Reed, solicitor for plaintiff. "It ought to," said the magistrate; "that course is followed in other centres." "1 wish it were here," said the plaintiff, "it would be a great convenience." Later on another witness, Mr Wtn. Mowbray, was asked why the Chamber of Commerce, did not fix commission rates. "I don't think they touch hotel work at all," he replied. "Would it not be well to get the rates clearly defined," asked the magistrate. "I have often thought of that," was the reply. "Still, there are always men without offices who go loafing and cadging around people's customers, and will offer to do the work for £10." "Why not incorporate yourselves as an associaton and secure license??" "I would like to see that, even if the licenses cost £4O a year." "I have been led to understand that some legislation will be brought down this year," concluded his Worship.
