MISHAP TO A .STEAMER. Received July .24, -9.34 a.m. SYDNEY, July 24. The steamer Kakapo, from Devonport, met the barque Eagie Crag, bound from Melbourne to Falmouth, with wheat, on Sunday, between Deal Island and Gabo. The vessel requested to be supplied with Greenwich time and in roanding up ran foul of .the steamer, denting one of her plates slightly. The barque escaped serious injury. CHINESE AND OPIUM. A DODGE THAT FAILED. Received July 24, .9.45.a.m. SYDNEY, July 24. The health Officer discovered seventy-two tins of opium floating near the Heads. They had evidently been dropped overboard from an Eas-tern-going steamer, with a view of evading duty. Two Chinamen *yere seen in a boat in the vicinity, apparently .with the intention of picking it up. MUNICIPAL ENTERPRISE. Received July 24, 9.34 a.m. MELBOURNE, July .2413Iie Metropolitan Board of Works ;has accepted the offer of the A&istralitn Mutual Provident fcjociety to purchase £300,000 worth of debentures. A WHALEBOAT CAPSIZES. Received July 24, 9.40 a.m. NORFOLK ISLAND, July 24. A whaleboat capsized in a heavy sc-i while pounding Nigger Head. of the .occupants swam ashore, but the remainder were in great peril until a boat succeeded in dashing through the surf io the rescue. A man named Kiily Adams was badly hurt through being crushed against the boat.
