THE NEW ZEALAND PROFESSIONAL TEAM.

NEW DEVELOPMENTS. The movement started in New Zealand re 3ntly for the purpose of forming a professional Rugby team to tour ohe North of England is apparently having a far-reaching effect, a):d it is probable that at an early date the Australian unions will have an opportunity of displaying their resource in stemming a vigorous rush by the professional side. The idea that a strong team of professional players could be raised in New Zealand was not credited a few months ago, but the promoter of the scheme in this colony has met with even more success than he had anticipated. The team, as already stated, has been finally selected, and arrangements had been made to leave New Zealand towards the end of next month. Now, however, this idea has been dropped on account of proposals made to the v New Zealand professional team from Australia, which may lead to a series of matches being played in the Commonw; nlth. Private advica received in Wellington, says the Port, is to the effect that a professich.,! Rugby Union destined to affiliate to the English Northern Rugby Union, is being formed in Sydney. Mr A. H. Baskiville, hon. secretary of the New Zealand Football Club, declines to say more than that he had been cognisant of the fact for some time past. A few Australian enthusiasts have made a proposal to him regarding the New Zealand professional team playing in Sydney on their way to England. Negotiations were still proceeding, and if guarantees and assurances were satisfactory no doubt the Australian public would be afforded an opportunity of seeing the "All Black" professionals play. The inroads of the professionals in various sports of the world are assuming formidable proportions of late. The amateur game in New Zealand is losing men; Australia, it appears, is to follow suit, ar.d only last week it was announced that a professional club was being formed in Wales.

The Thursday representative team to play against the Wairarapa Saturday representatives, at Carterton, on Thursday next, is as fellows Fullback, Gilford (Eketahuna); threequarters, Daley (Rovers), A. Holms (Liberals), and J. McGuinness (Rovers); five-eighth, McKenzie (Rovers); half, McKinnon (Rovers); forwards, J. Munro (Liberals), Hall (Rovers). Smith and Fuge (Liberals), Lavick, Callister and Phelps (Rovers), Tait (Liberals), and Hart (Rovers). Emergencies Masson (Rovers), Farrelly (Eketahuna), and Wadham (Rovers), backs; Kilminster (2) (Rovers), and F. Masson (Liberals) forwards.
