A LIBEL CASE.
HEAVY DAMAGES iPAID. Received July 18,77.58 a.m. LONDON, July 17. Mr H. Lever, head of the firm of Lever Bros., the well-known scap manufacturers, of Port Sunlight, Liverpool, instituted a prosecution against the Daily Mail and the Evening News for libel in connection with the Soap Trust that was formed last year. He declares that .the newspaper attacks on the trust had cost him in a few weeks £40,000 on sales alone, while two miliums -worth of £lO preference shares >of;the. firm declined £1 each. Besides this., other losses had oecurred on ordinary shares and as regards goodwill. The Daily Mail and Mirror withdrew the imputations against Mr Lever, and the actions were settled, fifty thousand pounds damages being paid. Mr Rufus Isaacs, K.C., counsel for the newspapers, announced that in view of Mr Lever's demeanour in the witness box, he withdrew the;rjlea of justification. Mr Justice Lawrence commended this as an honourable and proper course. The damages awarded a»e .ejKclusive of taxed costs.
