LITERARY AND MUSICAL COMPETITIONS.
(To the Editor.) Sir,—ln reference to the above competitions proposed to be held in Masterton by the Masterton Municipal Bass Band, it appears that the Band is to reap all monetary benefits, whilst at the same time, soliciting public assistance. If the Band itself carried this venture through, then the Band, and the Band only, vvould be entitledto the proceeds; but when the co-operation of the citizens is requested, then surely they should have a say in the disbursements; for there are, in our midst, other instutions equally well deserving, and indeed, requiring public assistance, whose claims are perhaps not advanced with the same persistency. In order to avoid any possible friction or ill-feeling, may I suggest that the entire management and control be placed in the hands of the citizens'- committee, who shall say how the proceeds are to be divided. This course would in no way lessen the credit due to the Band and from a purely educational point of view would meet with the approval of the whole community.—l am, etc., MUSICAL.
