The Masterton Bowling Club has a membership of 112. Tne Dorcas Society wishes to acknowledge with thanks parcels of clothing from Mesdames Miller, W. G. Beard, Boagey, and Mr L. Denton. There is a project on foot for the establishment of a New Zealand Automobile Association, and a conference is to be held shortly in Wellington on the subject. Up to the present nearly 400 entries have been received for the forthcoming show of the Wairarapa Poultry, Pigeon and Canary Association. Entries will finally close this evening. More protection for birds is asked by the Otago Acclimatisation Society. It desires the Government to declare Stewart Island a sanctuary for all kinds of native and imported birds and gams, and also requests that all coastal islands, national parks, forests, and scenic reserves should be similarly proclaimed sanctuaries. About thirty ladies and men, who are taking part in the dancing in connection with the Y.M.C.A. bazaar, held a very successful practice in the Y.M.C.A. Rooms last evening. Considerable ability was shown by the dancers, who are being instructed by Mrs Kendall. A rehearsal will be held on Friday evening next at 7 o'clock. The Postmaster-General announces that arrangements have been completed for the direct steamer from Wellington for SydneyJ to sail regularly every Friday, making a close connection with the Suez mail at Sydney weekly. The new arrangement will commence with the sailing of the s.s. Wimmera from Wellington on Friday, 26th inst. We have pleasure in complimenting the telegraphists of the Masterton Post Office upon the clear "copy" handed to us last night in connection with the transmission of the Financial Statement, and the Tariff revision proposals, which lengthy Government messages amounted to 16,000 words. We publish elsewhere a summary of both messages. Mr E. McEwen, J.P., occupied the Bench at the Masterton Police Court yesterday morning. Patrick Can* was fined five shillings, in default 24 hours' imprisonment, for having been drunk. On a similar charge, Percy Casper Frasi, represented by Mr B. J. Dolan, pleaded guilty, and was fined ten shillings, in default 48 hours' imprisonment. William Keeble pleaded guilty to a charge of leaving horses attached to a cab unattended in Queen Street, and was fined one shilling with 7s costs. A similar charge was preferred against Wil liam Drain. The defendant pleaded not guilty. After hearing evidence, Mr McEwen said he had seen the alleged offence himself and considered it a trivial matter. He dismissed the information. A meeting of citizens interested in the Literary and Musical Competitions to be held under the auspices of the Masterton Municipal Brass Band in November next, will be held in the Borough Council Chambers, this evening, at 7.45 o'clock. At the inquest on the body of Anne Joliffe L?ngdon —Koose,™who —was found dead, yesterday, from a throat wound, in her house in Nelson Street, Auckland, a verdict was returned of suicide while temporarily insane. The deceased was a tailoress and was about 27 years of age.—Association. A Wellington Press Association telegram states that Jaketh Eddy Wearne, a mine manager, residing in Colombo Street, South Wellington, died, yesterday, under circumstances which indicate suicide. The deceased drank some hydrochloric acid, which had been used for testing mineral specimens. The annual balance-sheet of the Masterton Bowling Club for the year ended June 30th, 1907, shows the club to be in debt to the extent of £BO 10s 6d. The receipts for the year amounted to £330 10s 7d, and the expenditure, together with a dr. balance of £42 15s 7d at the beginning of the year, totalled £4ll Is Id. The heavy expenditure is due to the fact that the Northern Bowling Association's tournament was held in Masterton during the year, the expenses for entertaining the visitors at the gathering amounting to £lO4 lis 3d. The excess of assets over liabilities is £157 6s lid. The valuation of. the Borough of j Masterton has been completed, and the notices have been served on property owners. The time for lodging objections to the new valuation expires on July 31st, after which the Assessment Court will sit to hear objections if necessary. The date for the sitting of the Assessment Court has not yet been fixed. Until the revision of the Valuation Roll by .the Court, the Borough Council cannot proceed with the fra mng of the estimates or the striking of the rate for the current year. Messrs Gillespie and Co. require men for contract fencing. Particulars of a yearling bull impounded from Homebush are advertised by the poundkeepsr. Mrs Barton, clairvoyant and teleptahist, announces that she may be consulted at the Railway Temperance Hotel for a few days longer. An'advertiser desires to purchase new and second-hand, furniture of all kinds for cash, and will purchase the whole contents of furnished houses. The members of the Masterton Fire Police are requested to meet at the station at 2 o'clock, on Thursday, to take part in the procession -to ths Showgrounds. Messrs R. Wilson and Co., Ltd., land agents, Taihape, advertise particulars of two handy-sized farms of 198 and 820 acres, respectively, which have been placed in their hands for sale. Messrs Mitchell and Griffiths, auctioneers, announce that their next quarterly Pahiatua horse fair will be held on Thursday, July 25th, at 12.30 p.m. Entries are invited till day of sale. Capitalists who desire to invest in Wellington city properties are invited to communicate with "Orchard's Agency," Opera House Buildings. This agency has several first-class investments to offer at the present time. Mr Newton King reports having sold, on account of the Crown Dairy Company, three more of their dairy farms, also the grazing run of 4,700 acres at Awakino. There are now only six dairy farms unsold, and anyone requiring a good property on easy terms should make early application, or they will be too late to secure one of the bargains. Mr F. Staples, who is opening dining and supper rooms, in premises | opposite the Club Hotel and next to : Mr H. C. Swan's dental rooms, Bannister Street, has all arrangements complete for the new business. On page 6 of this issue is published the bill of fare for Saturday next, when the rooms will be opened to the public for the first time. Mr H. A. Lamb, Government. Auditor, is at present making his annua) audit of the books of the Masterton Borough Council. A Chinese leper, who has been isolated at Macßae's for some years, died on Sunday last, states a Dunedin Press Association telegram. The Masterton Borough Works Committee, last evening, decided to recommend the Council to establish the corporation yards on the Council's reserve in Hope Street. The ordinary meeting of Coui'fc Loyal Enterprise A.O.F. will be held on Friday evening next. After the meeting the officers of the Lodge will entertain the members at a social. The Picton correspondent of the Wellington Post states that a right - whale, measuring eighty feet in length, was landed on Saturday by the Te Awaite whalers. It is valued at about £BO9, and was the first catch of the season, although several have been sighted in Cook Straits. The Otanga Block, of four thousand acres, which was recently takenover by the Government from the Rathbone Estate, will be thrown open for selection next month unless something unforeseen arises, states a Dannevirke Press Association telegram. The block'almost abuts on the borough at the northern end, and will be subdivided into thirty-one sections. The land is very suitable for dairying. A Palmerston North Press Association telegram states that at the Palmerston North Coursing Club's meeting, yesterday, 52 dogs competed in the Maiden Stake and 29 in. the Members' Sweepstake.
