The Journal of the Department of Labour for July contains] the following concerning Tinui, Masterton and Greytown: — j TINUI. Building trades: Slack; local carpenters have 'been doing very little work during the month, on account of the wet weather. Retail trade: Trade has been very slack daring the month through the bad state of the roads and flooded rivers. Unskilled labour: A few local a men have be.}n working about half-time during the month, on account of wet weather, at road work and scrubcutting, and several local men have been idle. There are several contracts Of scrub-cutting coming out, which no doubt will give employment to all. Several swaggers were seen on the road during the month; a few got employment at scrub-cutting. MASTERTON. Business in general for the past month has been fairly good, and re- . ports indicate prospects of continuance. Building trades: In all branches extremely busy. Owing to the wet weather which has prevailed, operations on all brick structures had to be suspended from time to time. Engineering trades: There has been a slackening-off during the period under review. Moulding: Good. Coachbuilding: Only fair business reported. Furniture trade: Fairly busy; all local tradesmen fully employed. Tailoring trade: About normal for this season of the year. Saddle and harness making: ModerRetail trade: Very fair business in all lines reported. Unskilled labour: During the month there were several applications for employment. Private emplovment for one married and four single men obtained. GREYTOWN. Building trades: Busy. Retail trade: Good; up to the usual standard. Unskilled labour: There is ample labour for local men. There has been a good bit of broken time the last few weeks owing to the wet weather. There is no demand for outsiders at I present.
