THE TAVIUNI IN COLLISION.
A CAPTAIN'S ERROR OF JUDGMENT. By Telegraph—Press Association. AUCKLAND, July 6. The nautical enquiry into the collision between the Taviuni and the commenced to-day. Mr McArthur, mate of the Pendle Hill, stated his vessel was riding at anchor on a calm, clear moonlight night. The Taviuni, which was coming up mid-channel, came in at an angle suddenly, and steered across the bows, carrying away the jibboom. Captain Lindsay, of the Taviuni, came aboard half an. hour later. In reply to a question as to what was wrong with him, his second officer said Captain Lindsay suffered from dysentery. It appeared to witness that Lindsay was off his head through drugs or that he was ill. Lindsay stated in Court that he did not blame the barque in any [way. The collision was due to an error of judgment on his part. The officers and crew of the Pendle Hill were accordingly released from attendance. In the box Lindsay was partially examined, but owing to his being ill, his evidence was postponed, and the enquiry was adjourned till Saturday, when the Taviuni will return from Westport.
