MAJOR CUP.

KIA KAHA v. CARTERTON A. The second round of the Major Cup competition was commenced yesterday the principal fixture being played at Lansdowne between the Kia Kaha and Carterton A teams. The teams were as follow: — Kia Kaha—Goalkeeper, Truscott fullbacks, Thynne and Gordon ; halves, Anderson, Donald and McLean; forwards, Richards, Williams, Brown, Rue and Nixon. Carterton A—Fullbacks, J. Fisher and A. Fisher; halves, Sievers, Stephens, Morgan and Eagle; wings, Goodwin and King; forwards, W. Fisher, Lindop, and Reid.

Up to this match Carterton A had an unbeaten record, but so well did the local team play that the southerners were beaten by four goals to two. The first spell was evenly contested. Carterton scored first, their goal being notched by Reid. Shortly after Williams scored a goal for Kia Kaha. The remainder of the spell was noticeable for good open play.

The play in the second spell was interesting and at times the excitement ran high among the crowd of "barrackers." Soon after play commenced, Carterton assumed the aggressive, and from a scramble in the circle, Reid scored a goal. Kia Kaha then livened up, and from this stage onward the visitors were outclassed. The home team played with splendid combination, and as the result of some good play on the wing, Williams shot a goal for Kia Kaha, and equalised the scores. The Kia Kaha team were now playing like clockwork. Williams put in a fine run down the centre and passing, several of the opposing team, hit the ball out* to Nixon, who from a good stroke scored a goal. Towards the end of the spell Carterton rallied, but it was only temporarily. , Williams again put in a splendid run, and scored another goal a few minutes before the call of time. On the winning side, it would be hard to individualise, but Williams, Anderson, Brown, Donald, Thynne and Truscott must be singled out for splendid play. For Carterton the Fisher Brothers worked hard, and they were rendered good assistance by King, Lindop, Sievers and Reid. It is only fair to the visitors to mention that they were without the services of one of their most brilliant players in the person of Bunny. Mr S. A. Noble-Campbell was referee. UNITED v. KNOX. Knox were beaten, yesterday, at Lansdowne, by United. % The game was very one-sided. The final result was—United, 9 goals; Knox, 1 goal. Baker scored five goals, Hatch three, and Winter one goal for the winners, and the losing team's goal was hit by Hornblow. Mr W. J. Vernon was referee.

GREYTOWN v. CARTERTON B. The Grey town team defeated Carterton B, at Carterton, yesterday afternoon, by three goals to one. The Paka Koura (Featherston) and Hinemoa (Carterton) ladies' teams played a match at Featherston, yesterday afternoon, when Paka Koura won by two goals to nil. The Huia team journeyed to Carterton, yesterday, and played a scratch match against the local High School girls. The game was a very interesting one, and resulted in a win for the visitors by two goals to one. Misses Smith and Hester scored a goal each for the Huias, and Miss Scott hit the home team's goal. After the match the visitors were hospitably entertained at afternoon tea in the Schoolroom.

The Huia Hockey Club have decided to hold their third annual dance on August Ist in the Foresteis' Hall. The W.F.C.A.'team played a team selected from their supporters, yesterday, the latter being given twelve goals in. The match, which was played to see which provide afternoon tea for both, was uninteresting. The supporters, however, won with the handicap. They did not score a goal, but the W.F.C.A. could only notch three goals, though they . were attacking throughout the whole of the game.
