FOOTBALL.

The Karioi Club, on the Main Trunk railway route, has a record which must be unequalled in the Australasian colonies. It has only once suffered defeat during a period of fifteen years. J. O'Leary, who was selected to fill the five-eighth position and elected captain of the Wellington Provincial team to play against the New Zealanders, on Saturday, has decided not to take part in the match, owing to the Masterton-Carterton championship fixture falling on the same day. The Wellington selectors made several efforts to induce O'Leary to alter his decision. Mr Quin, of Wellington, has been appointed by the Referees' Association, to referee in the CartertonMasterton match, to be played at Carterton on Saturday. Owing to illness D. K. Logan will be unable to fill the half back position in this match. The Albion seniors journeyed to Carterton, yesterday, to play Rover A, but were only able to get eight players to make the trip. They obtained five substitutes at Carterton, and . played with thirteen men. Rovers secured an easy win by 35 points to nil. Rovers had the game all their own way, and scored when they liked. Tory played a first-class game at half for Albions, and was the mainstay of the team. Mr H. McKenzie was referee. The Liberal and Eketahuna senior teams met at Eketahuna, yesterday afternoon, when the former were defeated by 14 points to nil. Albion juniors were defeated by Liberals, at Carterton, yesterday afternoon, by 17 points to nil. Rover B played Dalefield, at Carterton, yesterday, for a dinner, Rovers winning by three points to nil. A match will be played on the Showgrounds to-morrow between Red Star and Gladstone. The following team has been selected to represent New Zealand against the Wellington province on Saturday: —Fullback, George Spencer; threequarters, Wallace, Mitchinson, Fryer; five-eighths, Hunter and Mynott; half, Roberts; wing forward, Gillett; forwards. Casey, Hughes, O'Sullvian, Cunningham, McDonald, Johnston and Seeling.
