FRUIT AND AGRICULTURAL PROSPECTS. Received Jyly 4, 10.15 p.m. LONDON, July 4. Several weeks' rain has severely affected the fruit and agricultural prospects of the United Kingdom. Hay is rotting in the fields. SOCIALIST SUCCESS IN ROME. Received July 4, 9.9 a^m. ROME, July 3. Advanced Liberals, all of the Socialist ticket, carried twenty-five 'but of thirty vacancies at the municipal elections, of Rome. The result is a great surprise to the Government and the Moderates. It is attributed to a wave of anti-clericalism and to the cost of living in Rome.

A LIBEL ACTION.

The Socialist newspaper Muencheuer Post has been fined £25, with heavy costs, for libelling Dr. Karl Peters. The paper revived stories of atrocities attributed to Dr, Meters in German East Africa in 1891, calling him a cowardly murderer.

TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIP. Received July 4, 9.9 a.m. LONDON, July 3. In the lawn tennis semi-finals Brookes beat Ritchie by three sets to love, Gore beat Eaves by three sets to love. In the third round of the doubles Brookes and Wilding beat Ward and Steward by three to love.
