ESCAPED PRISONERS.
By Telegraph—Press Asosciation
CHRISTCHURCH, July 1. Deanley and Gibbons, two prisoners who escaped from Hokitika gaol, last Tuesday, and were captured at Lake Coleridge on Saturday evening, were brought before Mr Day, S.M., to-day, and remanded to Hokitika. Their tramp across the ranges must have been a terrible experience in the bitterly cold weather, with insufficient clothing and little or no food. There was frequent fording of the ice-cold rivers to be done, and after all their trouble they were arrested at the last place where the police were expected to be. The men had procured outside clothing to replace the prison garb, but they retained the gaol underclothing. They stoutly denied their identity when arrested, but the underclothing gave them away. The men had virtually been travelling day and night from the time of their escape to their lodgment in the lock-up.
