URGENT WORK

(To the Editor.) Sir,—ln reading the Health Officer's letter and the Borough Engineer's report on drainage, it seems to me that the latter is overlooking a very necessary and important work, especially in face of the remarks made by Dr. Makgill on the Kuripuni district. Anyone who passes the creek there must wondered why it has so long been ignored by our City Fathers. The necessity for cleaning out and.deepening this creek is as important as the cleaning out of other creeks in the Borough; in fact, much more so, when we remember there is virtually no drainage, and all house and surface drainage finds its way into this creek. I would have thought that this work would have been included in any scheme for the drainage of that district, and am surprised that it has not. It has got to be faced sooner or later, and I agree with Dr. Makgill that we should not wait until an epide-ric comes along. If this work was undertaken now it would allow of the other outlined by the Engineer being more economically and expeditiously carried out. It would allow of a great deal of stagnant water being got rid of, and thus minimise the risk of an epidemic. The question of straightening this creek is one that the Council will have to face later. I notice that a committee was appointed some time ago to deal with a portion of this question, but so far I have not noticed their report. 1 expect they are still dealing with it. It is to be hoped at the Council will do something with this creek. It is a disgrace in its present state, and requires urgent attention. —Yours, etc. RESIDENT. Masterton, June 29th, 1907.
