A DEFAULTING CLERK. SIDNEY, June 29. Glassop, the defaulting council clerk, of Ashfield, who was arrested in New Zealand, was sentenced to eighteen months' imprisonment. THE NEW ZEALAND. CHAMPION. SYDNEY, June 29. Webb, the New Zealand sculler, is putting in good work. The say that so far he is a better rower than the other New Zealanders who have come over here. Hio work seems to be marked more by grace than by vigour. One shortcoming is that he does not get a smart beginning. SALE OF NEW ZEALAND SHEEP. Received June 29, 8.30 p.m. SYDNEY, June 29. At the sheep sales some 1,200 Lincolns, Leicestera, Romney Marsh, and Shropshires were offered on behalf of New Zealand owners. A Lincoln ram belonging to Mr Barriball, of Waiuku, brought 12 guineas, and two others 10 guineas and 10£ guineas respectively. Other Lincolns ranged from 5 guineas to 8| guineas, Leicesters from 3& guineas to 6 i guineas, Shropshires from 1£ guineas to 4£ guineas, and Romney Marsh 4 guineas to 5f guineas. CRIME IN MELBOURNE. A DARING ROBBERY. Received June 30, 4.50 p.m. MELBOURNE, June 30. Robberies still continue in Melbourne. There was a daring one last evening, in St. Kilda Road, when a private citizen was felled with an iron bar in his own garden and robbed of jewellery valued at £l5O.

THE MAIL SYNDICATE. MELBOURNE, June 29. The local represenative of the Laing mail syndicate, Mr Croker, is willing to lodge an additional £25,000 as security for the performance of the contract, provided that the Federal Government does not penalise the syndicate in that amount if the Victorian Parliament fails to ratily the guarantee proposed by the Victorian Government.
(The Commonwealth Government demanded the deposit of a second £25,000 on the ground that the syndicate did not commence to build its steamers within contract time. Meanwhile the trouble is to build the syndicate, and the guarantee seems to be the corner-stone of that operation.) STATE REVENUE. SYDNEY, June 30. The State revenue for the year amounted £13,387,000, which is £1,104,000 above last year. Received June 30, 9 a.m. MELBOURNE, June 30. The State revenue fpr the year amounted to £8,308,800, an increase of £504,000 on last year,and £753,000 in excess of the Treasurer's estimate. OBITUARY. Received June 30, 9 a.m. SYDNEY, June 30. The death is announced of Mr Peter Collison Close, prominently connected with the late land enquiries.
