HOCKEY.

ONITSD v. CARTERTON A. United journeyed to Carterton, yesterday, and played the Carterton A team. The ground was in a very muddy state, and the game was played in showers of rain. During the whole of the first spell Carterton made repeated attacks on the United goal, but mainly through the fine play of Hatch, goalkeeper, the home team were prevented from scoring. The United were playing a very stubborn defensive game, Rees and Denton at fullback being prominent. Carterton again set up a determined attack in the second spell, and kept the visitors' backs very busy. The latter were all playing A well, and prevented any score being *JT registered until within fifteen minutes of the ca'l of time. Fisher, from a scramble in front of the goal, registered Carterton's first goal. Immediately after the "bully," the 'home team were again in the visitors' circle, and Fisher registered ■another goal. King and Lindop scored a goal each in quick succession for Carterton. Winter made a brilliant run for United, and beating nearly all the Carterton team, scored a goal. Time was called shortly afterwards, with the score— Carterton, 4 goals; United, 1 goal. Fisher and Bunny in the Carterton forwards and Morgan and Sievers in the backs were the best. Hooper, - Wing, Winter, Carley, Rees and Denton put in good work for United. Mr W. J. O'Meara was referee.

The first round of the Major Cup Competition was concluded, yesterday, Greytown forfeiting to Kia Kaha and Carterton B, to W.F.C.A. The positions of the teams are as follows:
