KURIPUNI.
PETITION TO] HAVE THE NAME CHANGED. The following petition is in circulation in Masterton, and will be presented to the next meeting of the Masterton Borough Council:—"We, the undersigned residents of KuriDuni, including Queen Street from the Masterton!;High School, respectfully urge that it is advisable in the interests ofjthetown of Masterton gener ally, and especially in regard to that portion known as Kuripuni, that the name Kuripuni be changed for one that is more suitable, and in this connection we suggest 'South Masterton' as a new name, and request that the necessary steps be taken to have the name of 'South Masterton' duly gazetted. There are several reasons why such a change as proposed is desirable—(l) Kuripuni in the Maori language means 'mad dog;' (2) a knowledge of the reputation which Kuripuni had in former years; (3) that such a change as suggested is in keeping with 'the forward movement' of the town. Trusting that our petition will meet with favourable consideration."
