ADVANCES TO WORKERS.
The Advances to Workers Act passed last session had been in operation five and a half months up to the ! 18th inst., and in that time 322 applications for advances, covering a total sum of £86,425, had been received. Mr W. H. P. Barber, M.H.R., has been informed by the superintendent of the department that 255 of these applications, covering a sum of £65,970, have been granted by the board. Six applicants declined the grants authorised, and amounting to £1,500. The net number of applications authorised by t the board is, accordingly, 249, and the sum involved £64.470. Classified according to provincial districts the applications are as follow: District. Number. Amount.
