ACETYLENE GAS EXPLOSION
By Telegraph—Press Association. LEVIN, June 25. A terrible accident occurred about 6 o'clock last evening, by which Mr Fred. W. Barratt, of the literary staff of the Manawatu Farmer, received such severe injuries that his life is despaired of. The acetylene light was not burning in his residence, and he went out to see the cause. A loud noise was heard soon after, but as the gasometer is away at the rear of t the house, behind other buildings, the family thought he had thrown a tin across the yard. Half an hour passed •and his wife went out and found him lying unconscious, with blood streaming from his head. Help was procured, and Dr. Mackenzie sent for, and it was found that the front part of the head and face was smashed in. The sufferer presented a pitiable sight. Upon examination the gasometer was found wrecked, Hnd it is believed Mr Barratt went out smoking, hence the explosion. This morning he is lying still unconscious, with little hope of recovery. He was widely known on the coast and in the Lower Wairarapa(Mr Barratt is a brother-in-law of Mr J. R. Nicol, of Masterton.)
