MASTERTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.
ORDINARY MEETING,
The ordinary meeting of the Masterton Borough Council, last evening, was attended by the Mayor (Mr J. M. Coradine), and Crs J. H. Pauling, J. Elliott, F. W. Temple, A. Haughey, W. Morris, W. Pragnell, J. C. Ewington, J. Prentice, and J. Yarr. Mr W. G. Beard wrote, on behalf of Mr Jas. Macara, stating that no offer had yet been received from the Council with regard to what they l were prepared to pay for the land belonging to Mr Macara that was required for the widening of Dixon Street,—lt was decided t<J ask _Mr J. Fraser to value the land required for the widening of the street, and then make an offer to Mr Macara. Mr R. E. Jones wrote drawing the Council's attention to the fact that a recent resolution passed by the Council in reference to plumbers connecting with the borough sewers was being applied to contracts which he h?d taken eight or nine months ago. Mr Jones requested that, as he held permits and had paid deposit fees on the same, the Council should put in the connections for him. —After a brief discussion, the Council decided to hold the matter'over until next meeting. Cr Yarr gave notice that he would move a resolution at the next meeting to rescind the resolution referred to in the letter. Plans were submitted bv Mr T. Dixon for the subdivision of his property in Worksop Road. —The plans, which provide for a private right-of-way. 20ft wide, were referred to the Works Committee for consideration. Mr W. B. Chennells wrote with regard to the dedication of land for the widening of Albert Street, stating that he was prepared to dedicate, at the Council's expense, the whole frontage of his property in that street, provided the Council would move the house back at an estimated cost of £SO, or pay him the equivalent, and complete the fencing.—The letter was referred to the Works Committee.
Mr C. A. Tabuteau, Secretary of the North Wairarapa Benevolent Society, wrote requesting the Council to nominate Mrs R. Kean as one of the Trustees of the Society. —The request was granted. Mr J. C. Boddington, Secretary of the Hospital Trustees, wrote stating that the Council's account of £7l 3s lid for laying the water pipes to the Hospital had been passed for payment, subject to the Council guaranteeing the maintenance of the service without any further payment except for the water supplied through the meter at fourpence per thousand gallons.—-The Council decided that it could not undertake the maintenance of the pipes, and that the account must be paid without any condition. Mr A. W> Hogg, M.H.R., forwarded a letter (which has already been published in the Wairarapa Age), from the Minister of Lands in reference to the purchase of land in the vicinity of Masterton Under ,the Lands for Settlement Act, for the erection of workers' homes. —It was decided to bring under the Department's notice that the land referred to was wanted for closer settlement and not for workers' homes. Mr E. G. Williams, of River Road, applied for a lease of the three sections in River Road belonging to the Council at a rental of £1 per annum, the Council to retain the right to terminate the lease at any time.—The application was referred to the Works Committee. Cr Haughey moved that the part of the Park Committee's report referring to the raising of the stop bank at the rear of the Park be deleted and no more money be spent on the stop bank.—The motion was carried on the casting vote of the Mayor.
