MASTERTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.

MEETING OF FINANCE AND GAS COMMITTEE.

A meeting of the Finance and Gas Committee of the Masterton Borough Council was held, last evening, when there were present—Crs F. W. Temple (chairman), J. C. Ewington, J. Elliott and J. Yarr.

Mr Jas. Cairns, Borough Inspector, reported that since June Ist £233 15a 6d of outstanding rates had been collected. A batch of summonses came before the Court on the 20th inst., all the claims being either paid or confessed. - A batch of summonses had been issued for July 4th, and another lot was being prepared for the same date. Inquiries as to the ownership of a number of properties had been made, and demands for payment within fourteen days had been issued. A number of similar demands had also been sent to new owners, and these would be followed by proceedings at the end of the fourteen days if necessary. The Gas Manager stated that as the gas mains to the hospital would be completed in a few days, it would be advisable to prepare for the extensions in Essex, Pownall and Cole Streets. On the motion of Cr Ewingto it was decided to cnll for tenders for the work.

The Gas Manager also brought forward a proposal to engage a woman to give lessons in 'cooking to purchasers of gas stoves; to be engaged partly in the showroom and in giving demonstrations of cooking, and partly in canvassing. It was decided, on the motion of Cr Ewington, to invite applications for the position at a salary of 30s per week, applications to close at midday on July Ist. The Committee will meet at 5 o'clock on that dnfco to consider the applications. At the same meeting a final report on the Gars Manager's recommendations on the gii.'j requirements of the borough for the next five or six years will come up for consideration. Accounts amounting to £1,420 lGs lOd were passed for payment.
