GLUT IN THE APPLE MARKET LONDON, June 21. Heavy supplies of apples are depressing the markets. Consignees complain of such large arrivals at the end of the season, when other fruits are plentiful. Three small shipments of Australian apples sent to New York are reported to have realised three to four dollars per case, duty paid. A STEAMER STRIKES SUNKEN ROCKS. Received June 23, 4.38 p:nv LONDON, June 23. The steamer Everton Grange, which left Liverpool for Australia on May 25th, struck the sunken rocks at Duiher Point, near Capetown. The forepeak of the vessel was flooded, causing extensive damage. The stern was smashed.

DUKE OF DEVONSHIRE. Received June 23, 4.28 p.m. « LONDON, June 22. The Duke of Devonshire is suffering from heart seizure, and has been ordered to keep to his bed for some days. The latest report is that his condition is easier.

EMPIRE-OWNED CABLES.

Received June 23, 4.30 p.m. OTTAWA, June 22. The Board of Trade at Montreal has presented a memorial to Earl Grey in favour of Empire-owned cables encircling the Globe to supplement the projected Imperial steamship line. The Board requested him to bring the subject before the Imperial authorities.

MR DEAKIN AND PREFERENCE. LONDON, June 21. The Daily Chronicle says the Australian newspapers show that Mr Deakin had not the justification to come to England with a mandate to ask ' for preference, nor was closing the door against .preference either unexpected or resented. The Chronicle adds that several newspapers look hopefully'to some progress along that more excellent way of encouraging inter-Imperial trade and developing communications advocated by Messrs Asquith and Lloyd George.
