THE TRANSVAAL.
THE CHINESE QUESTION. Received June 23, 4.38 p.m. PRETORIA, June 22. In the Assembly Mr Smuts, speaking to the want-of-confidence motion tabled by Sir George Farrar, said that the Chinese cause was as dead as the dodo. The Chinese must go. The Government intended to stand by the mines and assist them to overcome their difficulties. Sir George Farrar, replying, said that if the motion was lost, then it would be farewell to progress and expansion. The country's financial reputation would be injured, and its credit impaired. The motion was defeated by 45 to 12.
