Further particulars concerning the fire on the oil-launch and the drowning of three Maoris show that the fire was_caused through a lantern being dropped. j A man named Rene Tewhetu pluckily endeavoured to extinguish the flames with his coat, and another Maori, named Mohane, fell overboard while hastening to assist him. Some of the other Maoris jumped overboard. Aperahama Tewhetu was drowned while trying to save his wife, and their little son. Mohi was also drowned, as well as Mrs Renata, an elderly woman. There were eleven ' persons in the launch, and eight were saved.
