ALLEGED THEFT.
Mr W. P. Jdiiies, S.M., heard a case at the Masterton Magistrate's Court, on ' Saturday morning, in which James Kennedy was charged with the theft of £5 from the person of* Fred. Siegel, on June 13th. The evidence given by Frederick Siegel went to show that he and the accused were drinking at the bar of . the Central Hotel on Thursday afternoon. Siegel felt the accused's hand in his pocket, and very shortly afterwards he felt in his pocket himself, ! and missed the sum of to have been stolen. In the meantime, witness "stated, Kennedy left the hotel, and ran along.Queen Street in the direction of Rehall Street. The informant came out of the hotel, and seeing Mr F. S. Cooper, licensee of the hotel, asked him if he had noticed anybody leave the hotel. Mr Cooper replied that he had seen Kennedy leave the hotel and run along the street. Both Mr Cooper and the informant then went around into Chapel Street, where they met the accused, who, 'on being asked, denied that he had taken any money belonging to Siegel. The accused was then given into custody. Evidence was also given by Frederick S. Cooper, Alexander Cook, and Constable Egan. Accused, who was defended by Mr C. A. Pownall, reserved his defence, and was committed for trial at the next criminal sittings of the Wellington Supreme Court. Bail was allowed, in one surety of self at £CO and two others at £SO each:
