MASTERTON SCHOOL COMMITTEE.
MONTHLY .MEETING
The ordinary meeting of the Mas- * terfcon School" Committee was held last-evening, there being present:— Messrs I*. Brown (chairman), 11. H. Cork, C. Perry, H. O'Leary W. A. Fendnll, J. Carpenter, h. 11. Waddington and Rev. J. N. Buttle. The Treasurer reported a credit balance of £OB 17s 9d. The Education Board wrote forwarding £55 2s (kl, being payment of capitation for the last quarter, and special Government allowance. The headmaster reported as follows: Attendance Main School, roll 625, average attendance 5G5, percentage of attendance 90; Side, School, roll 100, average attendance 171 uercentage of attendance 90.;' Secondary Classes, roll 72, average .attendance '6B, percentage of attend-, ance 94. The attendance for the ; • OKonth has been good in all three de-. ■par-tmenta. I am pleased to be able to, report that there ,is very little sickness prevalent. On vhe 23rd ultimo. Mr A. EL Charters retired from the - staff to take charge.of the Greytow i'■ District High-School. Mr H. Sutton. third assistant master, has been, compelled to apply to the Board tor further leave of absence on account of ill-health. Two relieving assistants are at present .on the staff—Miss B Barr, M.A., in the Secondary, Department, and Mr C .'Jenka in^the, , Primary Department. The erection •of the new secondary building has interfered with the surface drainage, at the lower end of the boys' play-; ground. I pointed this out to the Board's Clerk of Works, and re- j quested him to report on it. This ■ has been done, and the Board has voted £lO for the work. I would recommend the Committee, in dealing , with this matter, to see that whatever is undertaken now should be part of a complete schenfe for grading the, whole of the boys' playground. On several occasions I have discussed with the inspectors and clerk of works the desirability of a separate entrance for the infant classes at* the Main School. Asa matter of convenience and safety : this is highly necessary. At the present time one narrow door-way has to serve for the whole of the girls and infants, and the amount of cloak-room accommodation for the latter is very inadequate. An additional entrance door, opening into the corridor on the northern side of the school would completely remedy this, and could be added at a very small outlay. I should be glad if the Committee would make application to the Board '"n connection with the matter. The visiting members were instructed to attend to the drainage of the playgrounds at both schools. It was decided to apply to the Board to attend to the matter of forming a separate entrance for the infant classes at the High School. Messrs Cork, Fendall and O'Leary were appointed the visiting members for the month. Accounts amounting to £3l 16s 7d were passed for payment.
