RACING.
TURF NOTES. (By Zetland.) The nominations for the New Zealand Cup, numbering 04, are a decided increase on last year's total. Quality is well represented, but as usual ,i number are included that can have but little chance of success over a iwu-mile journey. A certain amount of surprise has been exprosscu on account of Achilles being nominated, it having been stated on good authority that the Medallion horse had been definitely retired from the turf. It is more than probable, however, that he will not be among the contestants on the eventful day for he is certain to- be well taken care of by the handicapper, while he cannot be expected to improve, at any rate sufficiently to be able to give big concessions in weight to heihcd that may be depended to show great improvement in their running. Last year's winner, Star Rose, has noi I wen nominated, and the runnerup, Multittd, is rather a notable absentee. Mr G. G. Stead has Boniform, Bonny Glen and Seal Rock in the list of entries, and the Hon. J. D. Ormond has nominated Zimmerman, Sir Tristram, Oxton and Hippolytus. Nearly all the other leading owners are represented by one or more can-didau-'s. Five Wairurapa-owned hor.- - have been > .>■ d, so it is practically assured that the district will be represented in the big event of the year. Taking this season's form into consideration the best performers named in the list are Achilles, Master Marguerite, Sir Tristram, Elevation, Paritutu, Zimmerman, Mahutu, Grand Slam, Seal Rock, Truce and Volume. Others which have won races are Aeolus, Armistice, Aberration, Buccleugh, Chatterer, Culmination. Crichton, Downfall, Fandango, Fire Iron, Gazeley, Glenuliin, Ivanoff, King's Lynn, Lapland, Moloch, Mystification, Montigo, Maharanui, Oxton, Probable, St.Joe, Seaman, Somateria, and Waitapu. Several of the most likely-entrants are already at a short price, so much so in fact that betting may be restricted until the appearance of the weights on September Ist. During the present racing season the Birkenheads have won a number of races, but have not shown marked staying ability. Considerable interest is sure to be manifested in whether they will stay better next season, for if so candidates like Zimmerman, Oxton, Somateria, and Hippolytus may play an important part In the settlement of the race, for their pace is undoubted. The best of Mr G. G. Stead's is sure to be well supported from the publication of the Weights, and other candidates that are certain to be noted in the betting market are those which show good staying form in the early part of the coming season. It is yet too early to go into the respective merits of such a lengthy list of candidates, and there will be ample time for thirf after the opening of the next flat racing 1 season.
