MASTERTON LICENSING COMMITTEE.
ANNUAL MEETING. The annual meeting of the Masterton Licensing Committee was held * in the Courthouse yesterday morning. Mr W. P. James, S.M., presided, and there were also present—Messrs E. McEwen, F. C. Turner, J. H. Paul- 1 ing and F. Bright. With regard to the renewal of Mr F. C. Cooper's license for the Central Hotel, Masterton, the Health Officer (Mr C. Dorizac) reported favourably on the condition of the house, with the exception of a few minor sanitary details that were required. The police reported that bookmakers frequented the hotel, and that there wa» always a crowd on the footpath in front of the hotel, the annoyance of passers-by. "That's rather a reflection on the pjlice," said one of the members of k the Committee. MrPownall, who appeared for the applicant, contended that bookmaking was a legitimate occupation,
as there was no law against it. He added that bookmakers bad to stay somewhere, and there was nothing to prevent them from staying at hotels. With regard to the Health Officer's report, Mr Pownall said: "1 wish the hotelkeepera would take a firm stand, as tJpe Committeo have no power to impose these fads on them." Mr James: "They're not fads. We must be guided by the Health Officer in these matters." The renewal of |,the license was granted provided the recommendations of the Health Officer were given effect to. The Health Department, also, reported upon the necessity of carrying out some details in the sanitary arrangements at the Club Hotel, when the licensee, Mr T. J. Porter, made application for the lenewal of the license. The license was renewed, providing the Health Officer's suggestions were given effect to. Applications for renewals of licenses were granted as follows, in several cases on condition that certain repairs recommended;, by the ,Health Department were given effect to: —Empire Hotel, Masterton (J. Cress); Mulgrave Hotel, Dreyerton (F. Johnson); Mauriceville Hotel (F. M. Rosa); Queen's Hotel, Masterton (Mr 3 O'Neill, as executrix of the late Mr J. O'Neill); Eketahuna Hotel (Mrs Manson); Club Hotel, Eketahuna (A. JVlangusson); Railway Hotel, Eketahuna (J. A. Collins); Ranfurly Hotel. Eketahuna (Mrs A. E. Jones); Tinui Hotel, Alfredton Hotel, Hamua Hotel, and Occidental Hotel, Masterton (J. O'Meura). ' The application for the renewal of the license of the Marine Hotel, Whakataki, was adjourned until the next quarterly meeting. In the meantime the recommendations of the Health Officer will be required to be carried out. * . Transfers of licenses tare granted as follow—Club Hotel, Masterton— A. C. Scrimgeour to T. J. Porter. Hamua Hotel —J. B. Eaton to H. W. Clay AliVadton Hotel —Jas. Donald to W. Donald. Wholesale licenses were granted t9 the W.F.C.A. and Levin and Co.', Ltd.
