A NEW ZEALAND TENNIS PLAYER.
(From Our London Correspondent.)
LONDON, April 26
Mr A. F. Wilding, the New Zealand lawn tennis champion, earned fresh laurels at the Queen'a Club, on Saturday last, when he supplemented his success in the Mixed Doubles by carrying off the Singles Championship, and, in company with Mr J. G. Ritchie, the Open Doubles. To attain three championships at one meeting is a remarkable feat, and it is worthy of note that the blue riband of the covered courts has gone to the colonies for the first time. Thus it is demonstrated how potent a factor in the success of English tennis is the play of the Dohertys, who decided not to defend on the present occasion. In the final of the Singles Wilding's sterner methods proved too (fmuch for a> the superb elegance of G. A. Caridia, and it wat> again noticeable that the colonial is improving his play by his greater regard for steadiness. In the Open Doubles he and Ritchie made a much more effective combination than Gore and Caridia, although the last-named played some superb back-hand halfvolleys.
