RACING.

TURF NOTES. (By Zetland.) A three-year-old filly by Mahakx— Lady smith is being ridden by A. Watson, and will be raced during next season. She is a fine big filly, and has the appearance of being speedy. Nominations for the Wairarapa Hack Guineas, 1908, were received up to Monday night last, but at time of writing the list of e;,tries had not been published. It is understood that the .number of nominations is up to the average. R. Knox's Royal Blue is being schooled over hurdles and will probably compete in the hurdle events at the Wellington meeting in July. The Merrie England gelding competed over the small sticks two seasons ago. In his recent essays he jumped in a very safe manner. Oakley, by Explosion —Leocant is to be tried at hurdle racing, and for one of his age is showing aptitude over the jumps. He is a fine big horse, of undeniable breeding, and should make a name for himself in due course. Mahuta is again being given slow work on the tracks. He has built up considerably since the Wellington Autumn Meeting, and unless he is over-taxed by being rao.d at too many winter fixtures he should nrove even a better four-year-old than he was at three years. Letherin has been brought in again by W. Garrett. .He is a bit on the rough side at present, but will soon have a certain amount of polish on. Although the fetlock that was injured at the Fe'ildirg meeting, in November last, still bears an enlarged appearance, it is expected that the horse w'll stand a preparation. Wairarapa will be represented at the Otaki meeting, next week, by Mataari, San Julie, Clem, Sandix. Platypus, Phemie, Naphtha, Sherlock Holmes, Oblivion, Waloch, and Secretary. Moat of these have already been taken over to the scene of action, in order to put in the final gallops before the meeting. The majority are farly forward as regards condition, so at least a portion of the stake money may come this way. The Taratahi-Carterton Racing

Club having decided to apply for a i permit to hold a second meeting next season, a deputation cohsisting of five stewards will wait on the Racing Conference in July next to advoeate • the claims of the club. ( Capulet is to be shipped to Sydney to-morrow. He will run in the Victorian Racing Club's Grand National Hurdle Race, in which he will be ridden by W. Young. The Lethe gelding has been highly tried, and if he gets in. with a moderate weight will at least run prominently. Capulet was Mr J. Macara, of Maaterton. Nominations for the New Zealand Cup are due on Monday next, and from that date the interest in the colony's principal event of the year will begin. A. Wright, the Foxton 1 trainer, has taken a lease of Lass o' Cowrie, and the little Soult mare will be racing again next spring. The following Wairnrapa horses have been nominated for 'uhe Hawke's Bay Winter Meteiug: -Arahura, Matakokiri, Dulcinea, Variation, Tilson, Hinupai, Strathcona, Moloch, Hatly and Narcotic. The Auckland Racing Club's Winter Meeting will open to-morrow. A number of the horses that competed at Wanganui last week were weather bound at New Plymouth, and did not get through to Auckland until yesterday. If any of them are detrimentally affected by the trip, the local hcrses may have the best chance of success. The following may run the most forward in their engagements Maiden Hurdles: Ben Jonson and Loch Fyne. , Maiden Steeplechase: Mawhiti and Silicea. Jervois Handicap: Dan Leno and St. Syren. Great Northern Hurdles: Mahoe and Shrapnel. Hunter's Bracelet: Vizier and Hillflower. Maiden Welter: Waihuka and Octoroon. Cornwall Handicap: Delania and Te Aroha.

By Telegraph—Press Association. N AUCKLAND, May 30. Mahoe was scratched for all engagements at the Great Northern Meeting, to-day, at 3.40 p.m. Consequent on Mahoe being scratched, Shrapnel has been installed as favourite for the Grand National Hurdle Race.
