TWENTY-FIVE SHILLINGS A WEEK.

CR YARR ASKS A QUESTION. - « "Is it a fact that there is a man in the employ of the Council who is only paid twenty-five shillings per week?" asked Cr Yarr at the meeting of the Masterton Borough Council last evening. The Mayor: It is a fact. Cr Morris: That's the Park Committee again. Cr Yarr: It is a disgrace to the Council, then, to pay a man twentyfive shillings per week. Cr Ewington explained that instructions had been given to employ a boy for certain work, but the man in question came forward and offered his services for the work as he was unable to do hard manual labour. He was given the billet, and they considered that tney were doing him a good turn. The work he had to do was only a boy's work. The Mayor: Has any complaint been madfe by the man with regard to his wages? Cr Ewington: No, none at all. The Mayor: It would have been better, Cr Yarr, for you to have made enquiries from the Park Committee concerning the matter before bringing it up at the Council meeting. Cr Ewington: That is so. CrYarr: I have a right to ask a question. Cr Prentice: I consider Cr Yarr is quite right in asking the question. The Mayor: Yes; but he should have made enquiries in the manner I have before stated. Cr Yarr: I do not know anything about the matter. It was mentioned to me, and I desired information on the subject from the Council. I am quite prepared to take the responsibility for anything I do. Cr Elliott: If the man is satisfied, we should not interfere. The matter then dropped.
