THAT EXCHANGE QUESTION.
(To the Editor.) Sir,—ln reference to articles and letters which have appeared in your columns recently, we wish to state th§t the contention—that when the Masterton Trustees Empowering Act, 1902, was passed, neither Parliament nor the Trustees of the Masterton Trust Lands Trust contemplated any payment in connection with the exchange—is correct. The very important fact should not be lost sight of, viz., that the whole of the Post Office corner was once Trust property, and was purchased by the Government, not to sell but to erect public buildings on it. The demand for a payment of a sum of money by the Government after the Act of 1902 was passed came as a surprise to the Trustees, and there is no doubt that the demand is quite unfair. Apparently the Government NOW expect the Trustees to provide the land for a site for a Courthouse, and to pay the cost of erecting Courthouse also! —We are, etc. THOS. WAGG. THOS. B. MICHELL.
