A "CHALK JOCKEY."
(From Our London Correspondent.) LONDON, April 12. The Weekly Despatch is telling a good story about the first win of L. H. Hewitt, the New Zealand Jockey, on Rarer Sort. There was a backer on the course—not a small backer either—who had made up his mind for a good win on Rarer Sort. He only waitedt o see what jockey would have the mount, and was much disgusted to see the name of a totally unknown horseman—to him. He changed his mind on the spot—he wouldn't back anything that was ridden by a "chalk jockey." A "chalk jockey" is one who rides so infrequently that no board with his name printed on is kept on the course. Consequently the name has to be written' in chalk on a plain board. The disappointed backer's anguish was keen when he learned that the "chalk jockey" was the champion horseman from Australasia.
