EMPIRE DAY.

CELEBRATION AT THE MASTERTON DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOL. At 3 o'clock yesterday afternoon the ceremony cf saluting the flag by the Cadets of the Masterton District High School took place. Formed into a hollow square, the Cadets, under Captains Haslam and Bunting, and the older scholars were addressed by the Chairman of the School Committee (Mr R. Brown), Mr A. W. Hogg, M.H.R., the Revs. Buttle and Johnson, and speeches appropriate to the occasion were made. When these were concluded, the order was given to "Salute the Flag." Buglers sounded the royal salute, arms were presented, and the concluding item of the ceremony, "cheers for the King," was lustily given. Then followed the presentation of special prizes given by Mr G. S. W. Dalrymple and Mr R. Brown, Chairman of the School Committee, for the best essays written by the Cadets on their recent visit to the Christchurch Exhibition. The Cadets were divided into three sections by the head master for the competition, No. 1 section consisting of the secondary boys. No. 2 section of Standard VI. boys, and No. 3 section of Standards IV. and V. boys. The three first prizes were given by Mr Dalrymple,and the three second prizes by Mr Brown. Mr Dalrymple's prizes consisted of three oxidised keyless watches and chains, and Mr Brown's prizes of five shillings in each case. The prizes were presented by the donors. The winners were as follow :

Section No. I—Sergeant Hector Milne 1, Sergeant Colin Hendry 2. Section No. 2—Corporal Joseph Darvill 1, Corporal Richard Chappell 2.

Section No. 3—Private Thos. Christie 1, Private Geo. Saker 2. The presentation of the prizes won by the Cadets in the annual prize firing competition next took place. These were presented by Mr A. W. Hogg, M.H.R. The amounts ranged from £1 17s 6d to 2s 6d. The selecting of their trophies was 1 left to the boys, and ranged from a suit of clothes to a pocket book, most of the boys spending their winnings on literature. The winners were as follow: —Sergt. Arthur Wheeler, W.F.C.A. trophy, value £1 10s; Private Albert Rigg, 10s; Sergt. Arthur Wheeler, 7s 6d; Corporal Stanley Temple, ss; Private Alfred Ibbetson, 4s; Sergt. Ronald Miller 2s 6d; Sergt. Colin Hendry, 2s 6d; Sergt. Stanley Edwards, 2s 6d; Bugler Jack Fuller, 2s 6d. At the conclusion of the presentations, cheers were given for the donors and the proceedings were ended by the pinging of "God Save the King" by Cadets, scholars, and the assembled parents.
