NEW SYSTEM OF VENTILATION. Received May 23, 9.40 p.m. LONDON, May 23. As the result of the enquiry in connection with the disaster on the French battleship Jena, a new system of ventilation has Deen ordered to be installed in the magazines of all British warships. It is intended to utilise carbonic acid gas to keep the temperature below 70.

BARRISTER'S WIDOW SHOT. Received May 23, 9.30 p.m. LONDON, May 23. , A tragedy occurred, yesterday, at Southsea. John Langford Crump, a septugenarian, of Auckland, New Zealand, enquired at Southsea concerning property wherein he was interested, and claimed relationship to Mrs Crump, a barrister's widow, formerly of Tasmania. He interviewed her, yesterday, and the report of a firearm was heard in the room in which they were talking. A servant, rushing into the room, saw Mrs Crump fall dead, shot through the breast. Hundreds of peasants on the Cornish coast are clearing the rocks of wool washed ashore from the cargo of the Australian (White Star) liner Suevic, which was wrecked at The Lizard, and which was got off with the loss of her forepart. The efforts of the peasants gave rise to remarkable scenes.
