VARIOUS CABLES.
NEW SYSTEM OF VENTILATION. Received May 23, 9.40 p.m. LONDON, May 23. As the result of the enquiry in connection with the disaster on the French battleship Jena, a new system of ventilation has Deen ordered to be installed in the magazines of all British warships. It is intended to utilise carbonic acid gas to keep the temperature below 70.
BARRISTER'S WIDOW SHOT. Received May 23, 9.30 p.m. LONDON, May 23. , A tragedy occurred, yesterday, at Southsea. John Langford Crump, a septugenarian, of Auckland, New Zealand, enquired at Southsea concerning property wherein he was interested, and claimed relationship to Mrs Crump, a barrister's widow, formerly of Tasmania. He interviewed her, yesterday, and the report of a firearm was heard in the room in which they were talking. A servant, rushing into the room, saw Mrs Crump fall dead, shot through the breast. Crump left the house, but afterwards surrendered to the police. AN ECHO OF THE CONFERENCE. Received May 23, 7.47 a.m. LONDON, May 22. Sir William Lyne, Commonwealth Minister for Trade and Customs, states that Mr Winston Churchill,. Under-Secretary for the Colonies, sympathised with nobody at the Imperial Conference but General Botha.
WOOL GATHERING ON THE BEACH. Received May 23, 7.47 a.m. LONDON, May 22. Hundreds of peasants on the Cornish coast are clearing the rocks of wool washed ashore from the cargo of the Australian (White Star) liner Suevic, which was wrecked at The Lizard, and which was got off with the loss of her forepart. The efforts of the peasants gave rise to remarkable scenes.
CATHOLIC WOMEN'S COLLEGE AT,OXFORD. Received May 23, 7.47 a.m. LONDON, May 22.--The Pope has approved a project for the formation of av Catholic Cbllege for Women at Oxford. FEDERAL MAIL CONTRACT. Received May 23, 9.9 a.m.. LONDON, May 22. The Federal Mail Syndicate has not deposited with the Commonwealth representatives the additional bond of £25,000 demanded as guarantee for carrying out the contrast. The time allowed for the deposit expired yesterday.
