WANGANUI TRAINING NOTES. By Telegraph—Press Association. WANGANUI, May 21. Yesterday morning was fine, but the work done was not sensational. Irish and Rahui were companions in a good working gallop over two circuits, the latter then pulling up. Irish continued another round fighting for his head all the time. He is apparently very fit. Rangitoto and Barley did a strong two rounds; the former going very freely. St. Bill ran -i fast six furlongs, and Dear Dol 1 ' galloped five. Prosser's team all diJ serviceable work.
This morning the weather was fine again Rangitoto and Nadador did two solid rounds, the former having the best of matters. Gauze and Swimming Belt galloped a fast six furlongs, finishing together. Rahui jumped the schooling hurdles well. Marguerite and Kurawaka galloped a mile together, the former galloping right away from her companion, though she had a lighter boy up. Florio and Te Kainui did two rounds over hurdles, the former jumping the best. Top Rose and Le Beau were schooled over hurdles, both jumping badly. Sedgemoor and Anemon'3 did five furlongs fast, finishing ■together. Narcissus, Armistice, Crensot, Fishermaid, St. Killian, Barley, Pushful, and a host of others did useful work. Evenlode did long slow work. This geldng has a cold, but otherwise is very tit. Pawa and Waitarere had a good solid gallop over two circuits; both are well. Slow Tom was put over hencoop and fence, jumping well, and then did (Serviceable plough work. TURF NOTES. (By Zetland.) Mahuta has been eased in his work since the last Wellington meeting, and is furnishing into a fine stamp of a thoroughbred. He gives, every promisa of being a good 'four-year-old. The San Fran, The Workman, and Merriwee geldings are being ridden about daily, and M. McGrath haß them looking decidedly well just now. The first-named is showing great improvement, and is filling out nicely. The stable may be represented at the VVanganui meeting, this week, by Aberration and Moloch. The sensational dividend of £797 17s, paid by the double machine at Takapuna on Saturday last, will doubtless have the effect of bringing "doubles" into more prominence than ever. At the same time, however, this particular instance goes to show the great difficulty often experienced in making a selection of two straight-out winners, even by those who may be at the meeting and have an opportunity of learning the names of the most probable starters. The double machines aru coming into favour throughout the colony, and at least all the leading clubs will need to consider the advisability, of installing them in connection with other totalizator arrangements. Many Press Association agents throughout the colony invariably send the names of scratched horses when telegraphing the results of race meetings. Readers of the newspapers consequently have the names of the olaced horses and the scratchings before them, but no information as to !;ho other starters. A far better plan would Jbe to forward results and the names of the other contestants, ,ind the public would then be in possession of more full information than is at present given. H. Fletcher has decided to take up his residence in Blenheim, where he will commence training operations. The only racing candidate in full draining he took from Clareville is •iilken Rein. The Saracen mare is very well just now, and should increase her winning score during the v inter. For the Wanganui Steeplechase uid Century Hurdles the best backed
double so far taken is Nadador and Black Reynard. Both have proved most capable jumpers, but the events bear a most open appearance, and some of the lightly-weighted competitors may run very prominently, especially if the going should be heavy. The Otaki Racing Club has received exceptionally good nominations for its meeting, which opens on June 3rd. The club's progressive action in giving 300sovs. for its principal event and 200 sovs. for the leading race on the second day met with a willing response on the part _of owners, and the winter gathering should be one of the most successful ever held at Otaki.
