"A TIN-CAN BAND."
, ¥ —__ MINERS ASSAULTED. TWO MEN INJURED. \ By Telegraph—Press Association. THAMES, May 16. While the'Waiotahi miners were proceeding home, after ceasing work at midnight, they were bombarded with stones, thrown by six men hidden on the tiphead of another mine. There were several nai'row escapes from serious injury. One man was knocked down and was injured about the head. Another, named Lovell, was struck in the face with a stone, and also had the lower part of his legs injured. One leg is believed to have been broken. He had to be carried home. The men were warned that they were committing an offence and might do serious damage. They replied with oaths and volleys of stones. No provocation was given. The only possible explanation is that they were members of an adult "Tin-Can Band," who had been greeting a married couple, and that the stone-throwing gradually assumed a more serious aspect when the miners appeared on the scene.
