THE UNREST IN INDIA.
LONDON, May 14. In the House of Commons, Mr Morley, Secretary for India, in reply to Mr Balfour, Leader of the Opposition, said that the measures that had been taken in the Punjab sufficed for the maintenance of tranquility. The situation in Eastern Bengal, said Mr Morley, is strained. Hindu agitators are violently attempting to compel * Mohammedans, to abstain from purchasing goods in the markets. Great unrest continues, hence a new ordinance has been promulgated to regulate public meetings and to prevent seditious : speeches being made. ! The ordinance, Mr Morley?;stated, j was considered absolutely necessary i in the interest of public safety. He intimated, Jn reply to Mr W. Redmond, that it is inopportune" to discuss the subject now, lest agitators in India should see that the House of Commons is divided on the matter. (Ministerial and Opposition cheers.) The Daily Telegraph's Allahabad correspondent states that Mr Morley's firmness is having, a salutary effect on the agitators.
