DEATH OF AN ELDERLY MAN
ACCIDENTALLY DROWNED. By Telegraph—Press Association. GREYTOWN N. ( May 14. On Monday evening, between the hours of 6 and 7 o'clock, the death occurred of an elderly man. named Wallace Smith, at Papawai, near Greytown. The horse he was riding returned ,home riderless, with the saddle hanging under the horse's stomach. A search was immediately instituted, but in the meantime a daughter of Mr Mead found the body of Smith in a creek. It is surmised that he suffered a seizure when crossing the creek, and in falling twisted tie saddle round by his/weight and fell, the water being deep at this point and his old age against his getting safely to shore. He was a Bon of the late Captain Smith, R.A., who came to New Zealand in the employ of the New Zealand Land Compiny and was the first SurveyorGeneral of the colony. Deceased leaves several children. At the inquest on the bsdy, to-day, before Mr D. M. O'Connor, J.P., Acting-Coro-ner, the following verdict was returned:—"That the deceased, Wallaco Smith, came to his death by falling off his horse and being acci- "' dentally drowned in the Maungarera ' Creek on May 13th, 1907."
