THE NORTHERN APPROACH.

MATTER AGATN BEFORE THE BOROUGH COUNCIL.

A deputation from the Masterton Chamber of Commerce, consisting of Messrs J. D. Cruickshank and B. J. Dolan, waited oh the Masterton Boiough Council, last evening, with reference to improving the northern approach. ! Mr J. D. Cruickshank said that the I Chamber of Commerce wished to ! know Whether the Council would do anything in the matter. j Mr B. J. Dolan also spoke in favour of improving: the approach! The matter deserve' 1 the energetic attention of the Council. It had been suggested that so long as Lansdowne remained out of the borough so long should the question of improving the northern approach be held over. This was a totally wrong attitude. He asked the Council to use their influence to have the northern approach improved. The approach was a disgrace to the town. > Cr Ewington said he had always supported improving the approach. It was the duty of the Council to carry the matter* through. He moved that the Council take the necessary steps to have the work done. It was, he considered, useless to approach the County Council on the matter. Cr Pauling seconded the motion pro forma. Cr Elliott said that he considered that the only way out of the difficulty was to bring Lansdowne into the borough. Cr Yarr said that he would support something being done to improve the northern approach so long as the | Council had not to bear all the cost. Cr Morris said that he was also in favour of improving the approach. Cr Prentice said he would like to see the matter held over till the estimates were framed. Cr Haughey supported the motion. Mayor said that the Council were agreed that something should be done. He was not quite convinced that the Council was the authority to take the necessary steps. The motion was carried, and a committee, consisting of the Mayor, and Crs Temple, Ewington and Pauling was appointed to work in conjunction with the Chamber of Commerce in the matter.
