VALUING OF PROPERTIES.
PRESENT SYSTEM OBJECTED TO. The Clutha County Council forwarded the following resolutions, passed by them, and asked the Masterton County Council's co-operation in the matter: —(l) That this Council is unanimously of opinion that the present system of valuing properties throughout the colony by the Valuation Department is unreasonably costly and presses unduly upon the •already heavily-burdened taxpayers; (2) that the various local, authorities, having a thorough knowledge of the respective values of properties under their control, could, with confidence, make all valuations for less than onehalf the charges * now imposed by the Valuation Department; (;-i) that, with the view of bringing about a much desired change, a copy of this resolution be forwarded to dl the County Councils throughout the colony, soliciting their co-operation and also the assistance of their representatives in Parliament. At the monthly meeting of the Masterton County Council yesterday, the Chairman (Cr C- E. CockburnHood) said that he was in sympathy with the resolutions, but thought thai; the Clutha County Council should bring them before the County Con- I ferencc. • i Cr Harris moved:— "That the Masterton Council approves of the resoluJ( ons and suggests that they should hi brought up at the County Conference." The Chairman seconded the motion, which was carried.
