SALE OF LIQUOR IN THE PARK.
DEPUTATION TO THE BOROUGH COUNCIL. Messrs P. L. Hbllings and J. Cross waited on the meeting of the Masterton Borojgh Council, last evening, in support of a petition asking the Council to prohibit the safe'of liquor in the Park during, sports gatherings. Mr Holiipgs said that the deputation represented a large ? number of burgesses. There were,; about 300 names oo the petition. The Masterton Park-was seated- in'the Borough Council for <re people of Masterton, and the speaker suggested that tne people were cit'ttled: lovßome i consideration when a question/like the | one under notice cropped up. ; The Park was the only public resort 'to which the public could-goy- and it is visited by a'large number ; pf women and cbilt'ren. The petitioners—and he was sure the Council also—did not want to see the Park turned into a "drir-king-shop." A previous petition to the Council had been sent on to the Licensing Committee by the Council, He maintained that this was a wrong step.} Jt was a matter that the Council should deal With, and hpt the Licensing' Committee. .If the Council imnoced a condition that when the Park was let to any Society for a sports gathering no license for a booth should be, appliebVfor, he was sure the Licensing Committee would take this condition into consideration and not grant a license, 'the former petition had'hot been properly considered. '"".' ■'* '■"' Mr J. Cross endorsed Mr Rollings' remarks. He hoped the Council would say once and for all;"No more liquor in the Park." The Mayor said 1 that he was pre-, pared to,>go on with the jnatter or postpone it- for ! further consideration for the benefit of the new Councillors. Or Temple said that the. question of a booth in the Park was no new matter. The Park Committee of the previous Council had passed a resolution supporting the previous petition, but were out-voted. Then another petition came before the Council, and this waa referred to the Licensing Committee. He would support the petition. On. no other public park in the colony.was a booth allowed. Hj mpved that, the prayer of the petitioners be given effect to. Cr Ewington seconded'the motion. It had been' contended that the doing away oZ the booth would mean considerable logs to the societies concerned. Tnis" was a lame excuse. He hoped the Council would settle the matter once and for all, and keep liquor- out of the Park. Cr'Eil'Otfc supported the motion. Cr Paulvg: "Three huhdred residents have io r'ghfc todictate to five thousand. If I had a chance I { could gat a strorg pet Won in favour of allowing a booth in the £erk. I am strongly .against granting the request of the petitioners'." Cr Morris moved, rs art amendment, that tbe matter should stand over till t!:e next meeting. (.< Cr Pragnell spoke in . favour of tbe rrot'on. ~,'.' Cr H'p'iigbey 'said he would vote against the moion. ' Cr Yarr sa'ditbst the question was such an important one that he wondered it had not been made one of the issues at the last municipal election. He considered that it was ait insult to dictate to the Caledonian Society, St. Patrick's Day Sports Association, or any other'body what they should do. The matter Was one for the Licensing Bench to deal with: Cr Prentice said he; supported the motion. The Mayor said that the Council had the right to say whether liquor was to be sold in the Park or not. If the amendment was not seconded he would vote for the motion. Cr Pauling then seconded the amendment. • The amendment was carried on the casting vote of the Mayor. The voting was as follows:—For the amendment—The Mayor, Crs Yarr, Pauling,: Haughey, and Morris. Against—Crs Elliott, Temple, Ewington, Pragnell and Prentice.
