' Speaking at Manchester, Sir H. -Campbell-Bannerman declared that if -a poll was taken in the colonies tomorrow he was certain that only a very small number would favour forcing, even' by the gentle art of .persuasion, upon the Motherland a change of her fundamental policy in their supposed interest. He proceeded to contend that it was necessary to . resist the efforts of those calling the colonies to help them to destroy,the .principles of free imports and free industries.
