HON. G. FOWLDS.
By Telegraph—Press Association. INVERCARGILL, May 10. The Hon. G. Fowlds was entertained at a social by the Southland Education Board and High School t ßoard. The attendance was largely of educational interests. Responding to the toast of his .'health, Mr Powlds pointed out that the expenditure on education last year was £853,147. It was quite possible that in future years a reaction would be experienced, and in his opinion a strong party might seek to cut down the cost of education, to which the pruning knife could be most easily applied. This furnished a strong reason why the present Parliament should do something more for the endowment of the 5, education, so that they would have |k an assured revenue independent of consolidated fund. On the question of instruction in agriculture in primary schools he said it was quite impossible to do much in that way, and it would be left for the secondary or technical schools, which he hoped would be provided.in vari- < ous centres.
